Forests, green spaces and parks have a positive effect on the climate in the city, increase the quality of life, create biodiversity and contribute to a feel-good climate. But a planted inner courtyard, a green roof, a planted house facade and every square meter of unsealed ground also make a valuable contribution to the city. To make Erlangen even greener - on a large and small scale, on commercial and private areas - the city of Erlangen launched the "Gemeinsam mehr Grün für Erlangen" funding program for greening measures in July 2019. It is aimed at private individuals, interest groups and companies. Greening measures are funded with up to 5,000 euros per measure, depending on the city's budget.
With the right substrate and native species, it is easy to create high-quality habitats for flora and fauna. Greening measures have a demonstrably positive effect on the living environment and the urban climate. More green and evaporation areas within the city provide cooling and humidification of the air, especially in inner-city heat islands. The performance of photovoltaic systems on roofs can also be increased by green roofs. The greening of roof surfaces can achieve an enormous retention of rainwater and increase evaporation. Delaying the discharge of residual water equalizes the runoff peaks and thus reduces the overloading of the sewer systems and the risk of flooding. In addition, greening measures can bind dust and pollutants. The following measures are eligible for funding:
- Greening measures (roof and façade greening) on existing buildings
- Surface unsealing and greening measures for courtyards and open spaces
- tree planting
- Insect-friendly green space design
