As a specialist for media and information services, you will work in the library of the city of Erlangen. You will perform important public tasks and work actively for the citizens of our city. FAQ's Training - FaMI
You must meet the following requirements to train as a specialist in media and information services specializing in libraries:
- You have at least an intermediate school-leaving certificate or will have obtained this by the start of recruitment
- You have successfully completed the recruitment process of the city of Erlangen
You should also have good oral and written communication skills. You enjoy dealing with people, are creative and interested in new information technologies and digital media and can distinguish between important and unimportant matters. You approach your work conscientiously, precisely and carefully. You demonstrate your ability to work in a team with your colleagues, but you can also work independently.
Specialist for media and information services is a recognized profession according to the Vocational Training Act (BBiG). The dual training program at the City of Erlangen lasts 3 years. It is divided into theoretical training at the Municipal Vocational School for Media Professions in Munich and practical training at the Erlangen City Archive. Internships in Germany and abroad, excursions and attendance at specialist conferences round off the training.
Theoretical training
The theoretical training takes place in blocks at the Municipal Vocational School for Media Professions in Munich. In subjects such as profession and industry, media analysis, customer service and consulting, media development and media marketing, you will deepen your knowledge in the five specialist areas of the FAMI profession.
In addition, you will attend the seminars "Archiving for advanced students: The Bavarian municipal constitution (past and present)" and "Archiving for advanced students: Archiving law and archiving digital documents" at the Bavarian School of Administration (BVS).

Practical vocational training
The practical part of your training will mainly take place at Erlangen City Library. The weekly working time is 39 hours. During your training, you will be introduced to the various areas of responsibility and systematically familiarized with the job content. You will have the opportunity to apply, consolidate and deepen what you have learned at vocational school.
During your practical training, you will be supervised by competent trainers who will give you an insight into the various tasks and everyday life as a FaMI and gradually give you the opportunity to take on these tasks independently.
A healthy feedback culture is very important at the City of Erlangen: you will receive feedback on your strengths and weaknesses so that you always know how you can actively develop further in order to expand and enhance your skills.
During your training, you will receive a monthly training allowance (gross)
- in the 1st year in the amount of € 1,218.26
- in the 2nd year in the amount of € 1,268.20
- in the 3rd year in the amount of € 1,314.02
As a trainee of the City of Erlangen, you are also entitled to capital-forming benefits of €13.29 per month and a special annual payment ("Christmas bonus").
After successfully completing your final examination, you can also expect a final bonus of €400.
The training allowance is based on the collective agreement for trainees in the public sector (TVAöD).

After training, remuneration is based on the collective agreement for the public sector (TVöD). The classification and thus also the remuneration are based on the job that is taken on. The performance principle applies. The law therefore stipulates certain classification criteria. If an employee holds a position and fulfills all job characteristics, the classification is made according to the previously determined job evaluation.
The starting salary in pay group EG 06, level 1, is currently € 2,683.45 (gross).
In addition, you will also receive capital-forming benefits of € 6.65 per month and a special payment ("Christmas bonus"). You can also expect regular salary increases and performance-related steps.

As part of the training, all fees are paid by the City of Erlangen. Training materials required for vocational training and for taking the exam (e.g. textbooks or exam preparation booklets) are also provided free of charge. In addition, you will receive a grant of €50 for learning materials in each year of training.
A company laptop is also provided for use during the training period.
Travel costs for attending a vocational school away from home will be reimbursed if they exceed 6 percent of the training allowance for the first year of training, unless you are otherwise entitled to compensation. If accommodation in a hall of residence is also necessary, the costs incurred for this will also be reimbursed by the City of Erlangen.
In the case of inter-company training courses and events that take place outside the company, you will also be reimbursed for travel expenses. If an overnight stay at the event location is required, the City of Erlangen will also cover the costs for accommodation and meals.
All social benefits that the city administration of Erlangen offers its employees naturally also apply to our junior staff.
Anyone who regularly travels to work by public transport receives a monthly travel allowance from the City of Erlangen. During their training, junior employees can purchase the Bavarian discount ticket (€29 ticket). The costs incurred for this are reimbursed in full by the City of Erlangen upon application. However, it is also possible (depending on availability) to apply for a municipal employee parking space.
As part of the company's health management program, there are regular sports courses and other health-promoting activities that you can take part in.
The number of trainees is based on the anticipated personnel requirements. The City of Erlangen offers a guarantee of employment to high-performing junior staff.
Once you have successfully completed your training, you are entitled to use the job title "Media and Information Services Specialist".
You are an integral part of the City Library team and take on your own areas of responsibility. This may involve editorial work for a collection group, for which you select and acquire media and make them available to users. Your daily work will also include routine use of the library software at the service desk and information desks. Involvement in social media in combination with event and public relations work can also be part of your work. Depending on the department, introducing school classes or kindergarten groups may also be part of your work.
Training is the first step in continuous personnel development. A varied and high-quality training program is offered for further professional qualification. The aim of these qualifications is to keep your knowledge up to date so that you can perform your duties in a goal-oriented and successful manner and expand your personal skills.
The application period runs from approximately May to August of the previous year of recruitment.

Personnel selection procedure of the City of Erlangen
After the application deadline, you will be invited to the recruitment test, which takes place in September of the previous year. In addition to the recruitment test, the City of Erlangen will hold a supplementary selection procedure. This will be carried out according to the rules of an assessment center. We will then inform you as soon as possible whether or not you can be hired by the City of Erlangen.
