Preparatory service for entry into the second qualification level in the technical monitoring service for consumer protection

Have you successfully completed a master craftsman's examination in a food profession or the state final examination in a subject suitable for food monitoring (technical school) and would like to develop professionally and personally? Then the preparatory service to become a food inspector is just right for you!
You will be trained at the City of Erlangen's Veterinary and Consumer Health Protection Office and make an important contribution to protecting Erlangen's consumers. Your area of responsibility includes assisting with the enforcement of food law. They are responsible for monitoring the movement of foodstuffs, tobacco products, cosmetics and consumer goods. In particular, you will carry out on-site inspections and take samples. They take the necessary measures and provide information to prevent violations of food law. They report criminal offenses and prosecute administrative offenses. They also inform consumers about the basic principles of food law and its enforcement.
During your traineeship, you will gain a comprehensive insight into all areas of the profession and will find that your tasks are very varied and meaningful both during and after your training.
After successfully completing your preparatory service, you will work as a civil servant at the Office of Veterinary and Consumer Health Protection.

FAQ's food inspector
You must meet the following requirements for the preparatory service to become a food inspector:
- You have successfully completed a master craftsman's examination in a food profession or the state final examination of a technical school in a field suitable for food inspection (technical school).
- You are a German citizen or a citizen of an EU member state, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Iceland.
- You are not older than 43 years of age at the start of the preparatory service.
- You have successfully completed the selection procedure of the City of Erlangen.
The preparatory service lasts 24 months.
The practical training takes place at the Veterinary and Consumer Health Protection Office in the Veterinary and Food Inspection Department.
The theoretical training lasts seven months. It is divided into
- a four-week induction at the Bavarian School of Administration (BVS)
- a two-month training course at the State Office for Health and Food Safety (LGL)
- a four-month preparatory course for the qualification examination at the Academy for Health and Food Safety (AGL).
Contents
In the preparatory course (main course), knowledge and skills from the following areas and subjects are taught in over 500 teaching hours:
- General legal knowledge, general administrative law, basic principles of Community law, administrative technology including automated data processing (TIZIAN) and communication technology
- Criminal law, criminal procedure and misdemeanor law, public safety and order law
- Law on the marketing of foodstuffs, tobacco products, cosmetics and consumer goods including wine law
- Meat and poultry meat hygiene law
- Trade, commercial class, price and calibration law
- Commodity science including the technology and handling of food, sensory analysis
- Commodity science including the technology and handling of tobacco products, cosmetics and consumer goods
- Food and industrial hygiene
- Environmental hygiene including waste disposal
- Nutritional science including its biological foundations
- Microbiology and parasitology, prevention and control of communicable diseases, disinfection, sterilization and pest control
- Operational self-monitoring systems
- Introduction to the psychological principles of monitoring activities, in particular communication and conflict resolution techniques
- Quality management
- Sampling
Examination
The AGL conducts the qualification examination for entry into the second qualification level of the specialist career path of natural science and technology, specialist focus on technical monitoring services for the protection of consumers (food inspectors). The examination takes place at the end of the four-month preparatory course.
It consists of a written and an oral section. In the written part, six tasks from the subjects are completed, each lasting three hours. The oral examination lasts 30 minutes.
During the preparatory service, you will be placed in pay group EG 06, level 1 (TVöD). You will receive a monthly gross salary of €2683.45 as well as a special payment (Christmas bonus).
In addition, you will receive capital-forming benefits of €13.29.
After successfully completing your preparatory service, you will be classified as a civil servant in salary group A7 (BayBesG) and receive a gross monthly salary of €2,713.94. You will also receive an annual special payment (Christmas bonus).
All fees are covered by the city of Erlangen.
For the courses at the AGL in Munich, your travel expenses will also be reimbursed. In the case of a course with overnight accommodation, the City of Erlangen will cover the costs of accommodation and meals.
In addition, the costs for learning materials will be covered by the City of Erlangen.
As a food inspector, you will mainly be involved in monitoring the movement of food, tobacco products, cosmetics and consumer goods. In a district assigned to you, you will inspect and make decisions independently within the framework of the legal requirements. You will receive regular support and the opportunity to exchange experiences in team meetings, among other things.
You will carry out a large part of your work in the field during inspections and consultations. This will take you to a wide variety of companies, events and institutions.
Follow-up work, statements, etc. are prepared in the office, if desired also partly in the home office.
