- You have successfully completed the recruitment process of the City of Erlangen
You are also interested in construction work and enjoy working outdoors. You have manual dexterity and enjoy working with machines. You approach your work conscientiously and carefully in order to avoid mistakes and accidents. You demonstrate your ability to work in a team with your colleagues.
Road builder is a recognized profession according to the Vocational Training Act (BBiG). The dual training program at the City of Erlangen lasts three years. A special feature of this training occupation is that after the second year of training you obtain the qualification of civil engineering specialist. In the third year of training, you obtain the qualification of road builder - so you complete two apprenticeships in one.
During the apprenticeship, theoretical training sections at the state vocational school in Neustadt a. d. Aisch (1st year of training) and at the municipal commercial vocational training center II in Würzburg (2nd and 3rd year of training) alternate with practical training sections at the civil engineering office of the city of Erlangen and inter-company training courses at the training center of the Bavarian construction industry in Nuremberg-Wetzendorf.
Theoretical training
The theoretical training takes place in the form of block lessons at the state vocational school in Neustadt a. d. Aisch (including accommodation in the school's own dormitory if necessary) and at the municipal commercial vocational training center II in Würzburg.
You can expect the following main topics, among others:

During your training, you will take the 1st level final examination, which is identical to the final examination for civil engineering specialists. In addition to a practical examination, this also includes a written examination.
At the end of your training, you will take the 2nd level final examination, i.e. the final examination. This is also divided into a written and a practical part. In the written part, the areas of road construction, earthworks and drainage as well as economic and social studies are tested. The practical part usually involves constructing a road surface from natural or artificial stone. You will have to plan work processes independently, recognize work contexts, check the work results and take health and safety measures.

Road builders are based in our civil engineering department and mainly work outdoors. They work in work teams, which usually consist of foremen, skilled workers and helpers. The work teams are responsible for the construction and maintenance of roads, sidewalks, cycle paths and squares, drainage facilities for surface water, manholes and connecting pipes as well as road markings and traffic signs. They are also responsible for the maintenance of bridges, the installation of traffic signs (e.g. for major events such as the Bergkirchweih) and the installation of road markings. This means that the results of their work are clearly visible in the cityscape and are directly noticed by the citizens of Erlangen. Road builders are also actively involved in climate protection projects by extending cycle paths, installing bicycle parking facilities or marking bicycle lanes.
The construction depot of the Civil Engineering Department has a well-equipped fleet of vehicles and modern machinery and equipment that you use in your daily work. The necessary work and protective clothing will of course be provided to you free of charge by the City of Erlangen.
