Lord Mayor Dr. Florian Janik
Curriculum vitae
I was born in Erlangen on March 6, 1980. After graduating from Ohm-Gymnasium and completing my civilian service with the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund, I studied social sciences at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg from October 2000. I completed my studies in 2005 with a diploma.
Since the fall of 2005, I have been working as a research assistant at the Institute for Labor Market and Occupational Research at the Federal Employment Agency in Nuremberg. In addition to my job, I wrote my doctoral thesis on "From a company perspective - labor market analyses using the IAB Establishment Panel" and completed it in February 2010 (summa cum laude).
I joined the SPD in 1998. From 1998 to 2002, I was chairman of the Erlangen district branch of the Jusos (Young Socialists in the SPD). I was elected to the city council for the first time in the 2002 local elections. In 2008, I took over the chairmanship of the SPD city council group. I have been Lord Mayor of the city of Erlangen since May 1, 2014.
I have two children, Lotta (born in 2009) and Max (born in 2011). In my free time, I like to play board and card games, go running and swimming and spend a lot of time with friends.

Dr. Florian Janik in an interview
First and foremost, everyday life consists of meetings and appointments. In many internal meetings, I work together with the administration to find good solutions for Erlangen. I talk to initiatives and clubs, associations and companies as well as other stakeholders from the city about their issues, take concerns on board or bring people and their ideas together. I also chair city council and committee meetings. I attend many public events, mostly in the evenings and at weekends. Very important: coffee in the morning is just as important as regular exercise. I simply need it to clear my head.
Erlangen should continue to develop well.
To achieve this, we need to make transportation in the city more sustainable and climate-friendly - by strengthening pedestrian and bicycle traffic as well as public transport, but also by building the Stadt-Umland-Bahn.
However, we must not let up in our efforts to provide affordable housing in our city. So that all people, whether engineers, police officers or nurses, continue to enjoy living here as much as before.
This also includes resolutely combating climate change and doing everything we can locally to meet the 1.5 degree target at local level.
It is particularly important to me that we live together in our city. That we are there for each other, as we have been during the coronavirus pandemic. That we help people who come to our city. That we live diversity and stand up together against the enemies of our democracy.
Erlangen is in an excellent position. There are attractive employers, the economy and science are flourishing. Unemployment is low. We are a safe city with a high quality of life, a rich cultural offering and lots of nature right on our doorstep. We enjoy all the advantages of a big city, but we still have a family atmosphere - wherever you go, you will meet someone you know.
For me, it's the Kirchner Garden on the Burgberg with its wonderful sculptures and a great view of the city. Then there's Schiffstraße and Theaterstraße in our old town with its many small pubs, bars and restaurants and a very special atmosphere. And then, of course, the Bergkirchweih. Our fifth season is always something very special.
Running is now the best way for me to recover from everyday life. That wasn't the case before the coronavirus pandemic, but now it's an integral part of my everyday life. My favorite places to run are the Regnitzgrund, Tennenloher Forst and Meilwald.
I don't want to do without my bike. Like everyone in Erlangen, I cycle a lot in my private life, and as Lord Mayor I also get to many appointments by bike. My smartphone is also indispensable, not only for work, but also to keep in touch with friends and family in my hectic everyday life. I've always had the town hall key with me since 2014 and I want to keep it for a while.
Shaping the city together for everyone - that was and is my goal. For me, this means that Erlangen should be a city in which everyone feels at home - regardless of their origin, income or personal background. And I want to shape the city together with the people of Erlangen.
German hip hop.
