Car sharing
Stand: 02.12.2024
"Using instead of owning" - car sharing means that you share cars with other people. Depending on availability, you can book vehicles with the provider by the hour, day or week.
Car sharing in Erlangen offers a flexible, cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to owning a car. It is particularly suitable for people who only need a car occasionally and offers an ideal complement to public transport and cycling in our city.
In addition to individual car sharing spaces, Erlangen also has mobility points that bundle car sharing and other services at one location.

A car sharing space is easy to recognize. In Erlangen, these special parking spaces are designed in such a way that they are clearly visible to all road users. Here are the most important features for recognizing a car sharing space:
Car sharing spaces in public areas are marked with special traffic signs. These signs show a shared car with four people. There is also a sign underneath with the name of the respective car sharing provider. Some of the parking spaces are also marked with orange paint.
A distinction can be made between classic, station-based car sharing and free-floating car sharing (without a fixed station). The classic (station-based) car sharing system, in which vehicles are parked at a fixed location, borrowed there and returned to the same parking space, leads to a reduction in the number of private cars and car use overall. This effect is significantly lower with free-floating systems.
Currently, only station-based car sharing is offered in Erlangen.
Car sharing is the low-cost alternative to underused private cars, second cars and company cars.
If you drive your car less than 14,000 km a year, you can save a lot of money with car sharing. At the same time, you are supporting an environmentally friendly traffic concept, as car sharing reduces the number of cars used and saves parking spaces, which are particularly scarce in cities. It is an ideal complement to public transport and bicycles.
Car sharing means that you share cars with other people. Depending on availability, you can book vehicles by the hour, day or week. This allows you to use a car without having to own it.
Experience from other cities shows that station-based car sharing helps to reduce car ownership and thus relieve congestion on public roads. One car sharing vehicle can replace up to 20 private vehicles, in Nuremberg there are currently around thirteen. In Erlangen, too, the potential is seen to contribute to a reduction in private car ownership through the expansion of station-based car sharing. Mobile points make it possible for car sharing services to be clearly visible on public streets and ensure that they are linked to other modes of transport. Especially in densely built-up areas where there is high parking pressure, as well as at central transfer points, mobility stations can thus support multimodal mobility behavior.
The Bundesverband Carsharing offers a good overview of various topics and current developments on its website.
