Car-sharing
Stand: 08.07.2026
“Use instead of own”—car sharing means that you share cars with other people. Depending on availability, you can reserve vehicles from the provider by the hour, day, or week.
Car-sharing in Erlangen offers a flexible, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly alternative to owning a car. It is particularly well-suited for people who only need a car occasionally and serves as an ideal complement to public transportation and cycling in our city.
In addition to individual car-sharing spots, Erlangen also has “Mobilpunkte” that bring together car-sharing and other services in one location.
As part of a selection process in 2026, a total of 21 locations were allocated for carsharing:
- Four locations were awarded to CarSharing Erlangen e.V.
- 17 locations were awarded to Scouter Carsharing.
Vehicles will be available at the first locations starting in July.
The remaining mobility hubs and car-sharing stations will be set up gradually. In this way, the city of Erlangen is strengthening sustainable mobility options and creating additional alternatives to private car ownership.
- Climate-Friendly and Environmentally Friendly
Car sharing reduces the number of vehicles on the roads, which means less traffic and lower emissions. - Cost Savings
No maintenance, insurance, or fuel costs. You only pay for what you use. - Flexibility
Various vehicle types are available depending on your needs—from compact cars for grocery shopping to vans for larger errands. - Reduced Parking Pressure
Fewer vehicles mean less parking pressure and more space in public areas. - Stress-free
Secure parking thanks to a fixed car-sharing station.
Several car-sharing providers operate in Erlangen and offer various rates and vehicle types. To make booking easy, most providers offer an app that lets you find, book, and unlock vehicles near you.
Carsharing Erlangen e.V.
Carsharing Erlangen e.V. is a local association that has been offering carsharing in the city since late 2010. Vehicles of various models—from compact cars to station wagons to minibuses—are available at several stations throughout Erlangen.

A car-sharing spot is easy to spot. In Erlangen, these special parking spaces are designed to be clearly visible to all road users. Here are the key features to look for when identifying a car-sharing spot:
Car-sharing spaces in public areas are marked with special traffic signs. These signs depict a shared car with four people. Below that, there is an additional sign with the name of the respective car-sharing provider. In some cases, the parking spaces are also marked with orange paint.

A distinction can be made between traditional, station-based carsharing and free-floating carsharing (without fixed stations). The traditional (station-based) car-sharing system, in which vehicles are parked at a fixed location, rented there, and returned to the same parking space, leads to a reduction in the number of private cars and overall car use. With free-floating systems, this effect is significantly smaller.
Currently, only station-based carsharing is offered in Erlangen.
Car sharing is an affordable alternative to underutilized personal cars, second cars, and company cars.
If you drive less than 14,000 km a year, you can save a significant amount of money with carsharing. At the same time, you’re supporting an environmentally friendly transportation concept, because carsharing reduces the number of cars on the road and frees up parking spaces, which are particularly scarce in cities. It’s an ideal complement to public transportation and bicycles.

Experience from other cities shows that dock-based carsharing helps reduce private car ownership and thus alleviates congestion on public roads. One carsharing vehicle can replace up to 20 private vehicles; in Nuremberg, the ratio is currently about thirteen. Erlangen also recognizes the potential to help reduce private car ownership by expanding station-based car-sharing. Mobility stations ensure that the car-sharing service is clearly visible on public streets and that connections to other modes of transportation are provided. Especially in densely built-up areas where parking is in short supply, as well as at central transit hubs, mobility stations can thus support multimodal travel patterns.
