Dechsendorfer Damm (closure)
Stand: 29.05.2026
The city of Erlangen is extensively renovating the Dechsendorfer Damm. A full road closure is required from June 2 until September 14.
During the closure of the Dechsendorfer Damm, traffic from and to the west will be diverted via the efficient axis along the Europakanal, the Büchenbacher Damm and the A73 federal highway.
Information from Erlanger Stadtwerke: Bus detour
Erlanger Stadtwerke (ESTW) has announced that the following bus routes will be affected by the closure:
- District lines: 202, 202E, 203, 203E, 205 and the school transport line 254
- Lines operated by Erlanger Stadtwerke (ESTW): 283, 286, 287, 293 and the NightLiner N27 and N28
City bus lines 286, 293 and the NightLiner service will be diverted from the Schulzentrum West stop via Schallershofer Straße, Büchenbacher Damm and the A73 freeway to the city center or in the opposite direction.
Line 287 will continue to serve the existing stops in the Büchenbach area as far as the Am Hafen stop and then travel directly to the Bayernstraße stop. From there, it will also continue via the A73 highway. Excluded from this regulation are the school trips (V01) marked in the timetable, which will continue to serve the stops Albert-Schweitzer-Gymnasium and Schulzentrum West.
In addition, the stub trips to Hugenottenplatz on lines 286 and 287 will be discontinued during the construction period. After serving the Arcaden stop, the buses will travel directly along the rest of the route.
The Schulzentrum West stop will play a central role during the construction phase. Both the regional lines 202, 202E, 203, 205 and the school trips on line 254 as well as the ESTW lines described above serve the stop. This results in comprehensive transfer options for passengers between the district and ESTW lines. It also ensures good accessibility for pupils from the district and city to the schools there and beyond. The regional lines 202E, 203 and 205 run from the district of Erlangen-Höchstadt via Straße am Europakanal to the Schulzentrum West stop and then directly into the center of Erlangen to the bus station stop.
In addition, route 280, which is not affected by the full closure, is an alternative connection in the Büchenbach area with a connection to the Schulzentrum West stop.
Adjustments in the Möhrendorfer Straße area
- In order to ensure that passengers can reach the Möhrendorfer Straße and Kosbacher Weg stops, route 202 will run parallel to route 283 in both directions via this section.
- After serving the stops in Möhrendorfer Straße and the Schulzentrum West stop, line 202 runs directly to the bus station without any intermediate stops, just like the other regional lines.
- Line 283 begins and ends at the Busbahnhof stop during the construction period. The final stop at Hugenottenplatz will be omitted.
- Please note: Due to a possible high capacity utilization of line 202 in the Möhrendorfer Straße area, it may not be possible to pick up passengers at the above stops in individual cases.
- The St. Johann and Schlachthof stops cannot be served by the district and ESTW bus lines during the entire construction period.
Further information and the changed timetables for the city bus routes can be found on the Erlanger Stadtwerke website:

About the renovation
The city of Erlangen and Erlanger Stadtwerke are using the summer months for several important infrastructure measures: In addition to the comprehensive renovation of the Dechsendorfer Dam, work will also be carried out on the water network in Münchener Straße and a roadway renovation in Pfarrstraße. The aim is to bundle the necessary construction measures and ensure the long-term efficiency of the traffic and supply infrastructure. The work will require a full road closure from June 2 to September 14.
The Dechsendorfer Damm will be extensively renovated immediately after the Bergkirchweih. The aim of the measure is to preserve the structure in the long term and prevent major damage to the structure. To this end, the waterproofing of the structure and the road surface will be completely renewed. Due to the technical requirements and the limited space available, it is necessary to close the Dechsendorfer Dam to all types of traffic. This is the only way to implement the measure safely and within the planned time frame.

The Dechsendorfer Damm was built in 1990. In recent years, increasing damage to the road surface and the underlying structural waterproofing has been identified. The core of the renovation is therefore the complete renewal of the waterproofing and the road surface. This involves removing the existing asphalt and replacing it with a new pavement structure with new sealing and protective layers.
In addition, wearing parts of the transition structures will be replaced, existing cracks will be professionally sealed and localized concrete damage will be repaired. Damaged drainage pipes will be inspected and repaired if necessary. All of the work will serve to ensure the durability of the structure and prevent future damage at an early stage. Once the work has been completed, the current speed restriction can be lifted.
Frequently asked questions about refurbishment
The Dechsendorfer Damm has been in operation since 1990 and is therefore around 35 years old. In recent years, increasing damage to the road surface and the underlying structural waterproofing has been identified. The refurbishment serves to preserve the structure in the long term. The targeted renewal of important components will prevent the damage from spreading and making significantly more extensive and cost-intensive measures necessary in the future.
The focus is on the following work:
- Complete renewal of the structural waterproofing
- New road surface with a modern layer structure
- Repair of the transition structures
- repair of cracks in the structure
- Partial concrete repair
- Inspection and repair of the drainage pipes
The aim of all measures is to ensure long-term durability and road safety.
Construction work will begin on June 2, 2026, immediately after the Erlangen Bergkirchweih. They are expected to last until September 14, 2026 (end of the summer vacations).
Due to the technical requirements and the limited width between the concrete barriers, it is not possible to route traffic on one side only. A full closure for all types of traffic (motor vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians) is necessary in order to
- ensure the safety of employees
- ensure a smooth construction process
- keep the construction period as short as possible.
This is the only way to implement the measure within the tight time frame.
A detour plan has already been drawn up. This is currently being coordinated with companies, facilities and other parties involved. Particular attention was paid during planning to
- to route traffic via the efficient axis along the Europakanal wherever possible
- to keep Möhrendorfer Straße largely free of additional detour traffic.
As soon as the concrete detour plans and timetables for the bus services are available, they will be published.
Yes, the current speed limit of 30 km/h can be lifted once the renovation work is complete.
Yes, schools and other institutions will be informed in good time as soon as the specific detour timetables for the district and city bus routes have been finalized.
According to current planning, the renovation measure will cost around one million euros. As a road construction authority, the city of Erlangen is legally obliged to maintain its traffic facilities in a permanently safe condition.
According to the Erlangen-Höchstadt District Office, the regional lines 202, 202E, 203, 203E, 205 and the school transport line 254 are affected by the closure. Due to the construction work, these lines will have to be rerouted over a wide area. With the exception of route 254, all affected routes will begin and end at Erlangen bus station.
