Discover Erlangen

Stand: 17.07.2026

There is plenty to see in Bavaria's smallest major city, which has a population of about 120,000.

With its wide streets and many Baroque buildings, Erlangen is considered one of the best-preserved planned Baroque cities in Germany. Many restaurants and cafés are perfect for meeting up with friends and acquaintances. In addition, our cultural institutions offer a wide range of activities.

Tips from the Mayor

Which three places are absolute must-sees? Mayor Jörg Volleth: “Well known to everyone and, especially on nice days, very popular is, of course, our beautiful castle garden with its surrounding sights and magnificent flowers. You should also see the Kellerviertel district on Erlangen’s Burgberg, which attracts huge crowds of visitors, particularly during our legendary Bergkirchweih festival. But I also find our many neighborhoods particularly worth seeing; with their diverse histories—ranging from patrician villages to former monastic settlements—and their impressive buildings, they have a lot to offer.”
