Energy utilization plan presented
Stand: 11.06.2025
The focus is on municipal heat planning. A comprehensive range of information is available.
Erlangen was one of the first cities in Bavaria to draw up a municipal energy utilization plan (ENP) with a focus on heating. The 130-page document was drawn up in close cooperation with Erlangen's municipal utilities (ESTW) and housing associations. The ENP has now been adopted by the City Council's Environment, Transport and Planning Committee. It shows what a fossil-free heat supply could look like in the future. It not only considers the heat supply, but also the electricity sector, in particular the performance of the electricity grids.
Supply solutions in the city districts
The basis for heat planning is a comprehensive analysis
- of current and future heating requirements and
- the available potential for renewable energies in Erlangen.
On this basis, it is shown which climate-friendly supply solutions are technically possible in the various districts and make sense in the long term - without, however, making binding specifications for individual buildings.
Milestone for heat planning
The energy use plan is the first milestone in the dynamic, ongoing process of municipal heat planning. In the next step, the energy use plan will be expanded into a municipal heat plan in accordance with the legal requirements of the Heat Planning Act.
This will serve as a strategic planning and control instrument for municipal authorities, politicians, energy suppliers and large housing associations - particularly for the expansion of district and local heating networks. For citizens, the plan offers initial orientation:
- Where is the construction or expansion of local and district heating networks fundamentally possible in the future?
- Which districts are suitable for smaller heating networks or decentralized solutions such as heat pumps?
- Where is there still a need for clarification in the medium term?
Comprehensive range of information
The city of Erlangen offers a wide range of information and advice on the subject of energy and heat planning. The city's energy advice service is available free of charge to all interested parties, especially for questions about
- about replacing heating systems
- energy-efficient refurbishment or
- about funding opportunities.
The Klima-Mobil is also on the road in many parts of the city. On site, citizens can find out about heat planning, ask questions and receive individual advice.

There is also a report in the city newspaper "Rathausplatz 1" - June 2025 issue.

Information on municipal heat planning in Erlangen
Progressive climate change, dependence on energy imports and rising energy costs require a fundamental change in the way we use energy. The city of Erlangen has set itself the goal of achieving climate neutrality in the urban area as quickly as possible. In the climate crisis, this is a necessary step for local, regional and global sustainable development.
Energy consulting
Is my house, balcony or garage suitable for a photovoltaic system? What are the advantages of an energy-efficient renovation? What do I need to consider when replacing my heating system? How can I make my new build as sustainable as possible? How can I get funding?
Klimamobil informs
It is on the move locally. Find out about energy-saving living and subsidy programs.
