An earthquake struck around 1,000 kilometers southeast of Istanbul in the early morning of February 6.
Around 50,000 people lost their lives. Mayor Florian Janik reacted to the earthquake disaster with a letter of solidarity to his counterpart Sayin Riza Akpolat in the Turkish twin city of Beşiktaş on the day of the disaster. Janik wrote: "The terrible earthquake in your country leaves us all speechless. In view of so many deaths and material damage, I am simply stunned. I would like to express our sincere condolences to you and all Turks. Our thoughts are with you in these difficult days."
