ErlangenPass - frequently asked questions
Stand: 20.03.2026
You can experience a lot in Erlangen: in the theater, at concerts or at sports events. We want everyone in our city to be able to take part in these activities. That's why we have the ErlangenPass.
You can receive the ErlangenPass if you receive social benefits or are doing voluntary service. If you do not meet these requirements but have little money at your disposal, you can also apply for the ErlangenPass by means of a calculation.
You can receive the ErlangenPass free of charge upon application if you receive social benefits such as basic income support, old-age basic income support, or housing assistance, or if you are performing voluntary service (Federal Voluntary Service, voluntary social or environmental year). You can apply for the ErlangenPass at a fee if you do not receive social benefits—for example, because your income exceeds the income limits—but still have limited financial resources. Every person in the household aged 15 or older is eligible to apply.
There are no costs for the ErlangenPass. This also applies to the ErlangenPass with charge.
You can find the income and asset limits on the ErlangenPass service page
You can find the rollover calculator on our homepage at www.erlangen.de/ep-rechner
You can apply for the ErlangenPass online, by mail, or in person at City Hall, at the Central Office for Education and Participation / ErlangenPass. Please be sure to make an appointment if you plan to visit in person.
To apply, we require a copy of your social benefits notice; if you are applying based on a calculation, please submit supporting documentation in the form of bank statements. You can find the required documents on the ErlangenPass service page.
The calculation does not take into account the actual rent, but a flat rate calculated from the upper rent limit plus a flat rate for heating costs. In this respect, you do not need to submit any documents.
The total household includes all persons living in your household, for example (spouse) partners, children and grandparents.
No, people who live in a shared flat are considered to be separate households unless they live together.
No, subtenants do not count as part of the total household.
No, one-off income (such as Christmas bonuses or children's vacation jobs) is not taken into account and therefore does not have to be declared.
You can claim maintenance for a family member not living in the household as a burden. If your contributions to health and long-term care insurance are not deducted directly from your gross salary, but are paid separately by you, you can also claim these as a burden. However, only the costs for basic cover are taken into account here. Optional benefits or supplementary insurance cannot be recognized.
Child benefit that you receive is always taken into account. If you pass on child benefit to a child who does not live in your household (e.g. student), this can be taken into account as a maintenance payment if you have proof of the maintenance payment (e.g. bank statement).
If you are self-employed, please arrange a personal appointment with your case worker at the Central Office for Education and Participation/ErlangenPass. In this case, the online calculator is only of very limited use.
You can find a list of all discounts on our website www.erlangen.de/erlangenpass-vorteile.
You can find even more information on the offers, the cooperation partners and many other tips in our brochure "Gut beraten - günstig leben". You can obtain this free of charge from the information desk in the town hall or from many public places, such as savings banks, libraries, etc. You can also download it online at www.erlangenpass.de.
Please present your ErlangenPass and an identification document (identity card, passport) to the respective provider in order to claim the respective discount.
The ErlangenPass is valid for at least 1 year. The exact period of validity can be found on the sticker on the back of the pass.
You can easily renew your ErlangenPass free of charge by mail or email. To do so, please send your original ErlangenPass and your current notification or proof of volunteer work to your assigned case worker.
For the ErlangenPass that requires a fee, please submit an application for renewal and also send us your original ErlangenPass.
The extension is possible from 3 months before the ErlangenPass expires.
Each person who is eligible for an ErlangenPass receives their own ErlangenPass with their name on it, so the pass is only valid for that person.
No, in this case you may keep and use the ErlangenPass until the expiration date.
In this case, please contact your case worker at the Central Office for Education and Participation/ErlangenPass as soon as possible so that a replacement card can be ordered for you.
If you move within the city of Erlangen, please inform your case worker at the Central Office for Education and Participation/ErlangenPass of your new address. If you no longer live in Erlangen after your move, you must hand in your ErlangenPass immediately and may no longer use it.
No, people with a severely disabled person's pass are also entitled to the ErlangenPass either free of charge or with a charge.
No, only people who live in the city of Erlangen can apply for an ErlangenPass.
There are already many discounts for trainees and students, which are very often the same as the ErlangenPass discounts.
