How can Erlangen become climate-neutral as quickly as possible? From March to July 2022, 25 randomly selected citizens and over 35 stakeholders from business, civil society, science and administration addressed this question. In a participation process that is unique in Germany to date, 41 measures to achieve climate neutrality in Erlangen were developed under the expert guidance of the renowned ifeu research institute in Heidelberg. In autumn 2022, the city council decided to make the catalog of measures the basis for further action and to further concretize it in the coming years.

Shaping the future of climate action: The participants
From March to July 2022, two groups worked on the catalog of measures that shows Erlangen the concrete path to climate neutrality: The Citizens' Council and the Stakeholder Group. The "Climate Awakening Roadmap" was developed in several meetings and with the support of experts.

The meetings of the stakeholder group and the citizens' council took place from March to July 2022. In several rounds of meetings, the groups worked on a viable catalog of measures to make Erlangen climate-neutral.
Recommendations of the Citizens' Council and the stakeholder group
Before the measures were submitted to the city council for approval, both committees voted on the 41 measures of the final Climate Action Roadmap in the areas of cross-sector measures, energy supply, buildings, mobility, food and consumption at the end of the participation process.
Starting signal for the climate awakening
With its decision on October 27, Erlangen City Council decided to make the "Climate Awakening Roadmap" catalog of measures the basis for further action. New city employees are to be recruited in 2023 in order to start implementing 14 selected measures.
