Have you been unemployed for some time, perhaps due to health limitations, and would you like to get back on your feet professionally? As a recipient of basic income support, a work opportunity allows you to perform a job that prepares you for employment in the labor market.
If you participate in a work opportunity, you will receive what is known as an “additional expense allowance” in addition to your basic income support. This allowance is intended to compensate you for expenses incurred as a result of the work opportunity.
Additional expenses include, in particular, travel costs and work clothing. If you receive benefits in kind from the administering agency—such as a monthly transit pass—the additional expense allowance is reduced by the corresponding amount. If you receive additional cash benefits from the provider, these are considered income. In that case, you will receive a reduced basic security benefit.
Examples of organizations providing work opportunities include
- educational institutions
- charitable organizations
- public-benefit organizations
- nonprofit associations
A work opportunity typically lasts up to 24 months and can be extended by up to 12 months.
The Job Center determines the work schedule on a case-by-case basis. The sponsoring organization covers your accident insurance.
-
The Job Center can suggest a job opportunity to you if
- this is necessary for your integration into the workforce and no other benefit is suitable for this purpose, and
- you have not spent more than 24 months in a work opportunity program within the last 5 years.
-
The job opportunity must
- be supplementary. This means that without the support, the work would not be performed at all, would not be performed to this extent, or would only be performed at a later date.
- be in the public interest. Your work must therefore serve the general public, not commercial interests or a limited group of people.
- be competition-neutral; in other words, it must not displace or prevent regular employment .
You will be offered a job opportunity by your contact person at the Job Center.
- Your contact person will explain the nature, scope, and duration of the work and let you know where you will be performing the tasks. You can also share your interests during this process.
