In Bavaria, the districts and independent cities are responsible for waste disposal in their respective areas as a mandatory duty. If you have questions about waste disposal facilities (location, hours of operation, etc.) or disposal fees, please contact your district or independent city.

Many types of waste are collected separately as recyclables. The specific types of recyclables, how they are collected, and what ultimately counts as residual waste are regulated by the Circular Economy Act (KrWG) and the municipal waste ordinance.

Information on this is available from the waste advisory services of the municipalities (counties, independent cities) or waste management associations. These entities are responsible for waste disposal in accordance with waste management regulations and provide curbside collection and drop-off systems. Their focus is on measures to support material recycling.

• Collection systems include curbside trash collection, the yellow bin, the paper bin, and the green waste/organic waste bin, as well as the yellow bag, if it is collected.
• Drop-off systems include recycling stations (especially for glass, metal, and textiles) and recycling centers.

The more convenient the collection is for residents—that is, the closer it is to their homes—the greater the volume of waste collected. The greater the public’s knowledge of proper separation and the greater the individual’s sense of responsibility, the more uniformly sorted the collection will be—a prerequisite for high-quality recycling.

Shared (combined) general waste bin

The 60-liter general waste bin is the smallest service unit in the city of Erlangen. To further reduce fees, you have the option of sharing a general waste bin with a like-minded neighbor. A maximum of two people may share a general waste bin. One of the general waste bins is removed, and the fees are reduced accordingly for both neighbors. However, both parties can still take advantage of all other waste management services.

Ordering Trash Bins

Property owners can order, change, or cancel their trash bins by phone or in writing.

Bulky Waste Collection

Every household in Erlangen has the opportunity once a year to have its bulky waste picked up directly from their residence. In addition, private households can drop off their bulky waste in normal household quantities directly at the waste transfer station free of charge.

Waste Collection Calendar

The waste collection calendar is customized to your specific address, bin combination, and collection schedule. All you need to do is enter your street name. A notification feature allows you to automatically receive a reminder email when it’s time to put out your bins or bags.

Application for Home Composting

You can submit an application to compost your own organic and yard waste. This may reduce the amount of your waste disposal fee.

You are registered at your place of residence.

Shared (joint) general waste bin

To split the fee, we require a written request from both parties sharing the fee.

You are a homeowner within the administrative area of the City of Erlangen.

Application for Home Composting

You must compost all biodegradable waste generated on your own property. You must also reuse the compost you produce there. You must commit to this in writing and meet the necessary requirements (at least 50 m² of undeveloped land per resident).

Most local authorities publish waste collection calendars. These calendars provide information on collection dates and the types of waste collected.

Bulky Waste Pickup Request

After scheduling an appointment, you will receive a pickup or drop-off date.

Waste collection generally takes place on specific dates.

The costs are determined in accordance with the municipal fee schedule.
