The local contribution and fee statutes to the drainage statutes (BGS/EWS) generally stipulate that property owners (and other potential fee payers specified in the statutes) must pay wastewater fees to the municipality for the wastewater volumes that are fed into the public drainage system from their property.
The municipalities can use various permissible methods to determine the wastewater charges. For example, uniform discharge charges according to the so-called fresh water scale can be considered, as well as differentiated charges for precipitation and wastewater.
Please contact your local authority for more information on the specific local regulations.
Regional Supplement (Editorially responsible: City of Erlangen)
Since 1.1.2015, the wastewater charges (referred to as sewer usage charges in the BGS/EWS) in Erlangen have consisted of the
wastewater fee and the rainwater fee.
The two types of charges are each levied with separate notices.
The wastewater fee is based on the volume of water in m³ that is discharged into the sewer. As a rule, this largely corresponds to the fresh water consumed, but can also include, for example, cistern or well water discharged. It is set as an annual fee.
The drainage company works together with Erlanger Stadtwerke (ESTW) to prepare the fee notices.
If you have any queries, you can contact the ESTW customer center either by telephone on +(49) 09131 / 823 - 4141 or by email at kundenzentrum@estw.de.
When making transfers, please always quote the customer number and consumption point number stated in the notification or in a separate letter!

The rainwater fee is calculated according to the proportion of the respective property from which rainwater is discharged or runs off into the public drainage system. In most cases, this proportion is determined using an area runoff coefficient (GAB) of the property and set by notice (for details, see § 11 BGS/EWS).
This decision is valid as a permanent decision until it is replaced by a new decision.
The amount of the charge is based on all built-up and paved areas of land draining into the public sewer system.
If these deviate by at least 20 percent or 250 m² from the areas stated in the assessment notice, the area subject to the charge and thus the charge payable can be corrected with an application for individual assessment (see form).
The correction is made via a new assessment notice.
Please always quote the reference number stated in the assessment notice when making transfers!
By resolution of the city council on 26.11.2020, the wastewater fee rates were set as follows from 1.1.2021
- Wastewater: 1.92 €/m³
- Rainwater: 0.77 €/m²
Further information on the calculation of charges and the types of charges can be found in the BGS/EWS and the associated plan with the GAB for the city of Erlangen.
