If your municipality has stipulated this in its drainage regulations, properties that are served by channels belonging to a public drainage system must generally also be connected to that system and use it. Technically, this requires installing a so-called property connection—that is, a pipe running from the public sewer to the inspection chamber (which is usually located at the property line). Through this property connection, you then connect the areas and buildings on the property that require wastewater disposal to the public drainage system.
Whether the municipality or the property owner is responsible for the installation, replacement, modification, and maintenance of the property connection varies from municipality to municipality. Please contact your local municipality to learn more about this. There, you can also obtain information on the technical requirements for connecting your property to the system and on the costs you will incur for installing such a property connection.
