A corpse passport is required for repatriations within Germany or abroad if the country to which the body is to be repatriated or a country touched during the journey requires a corpse passport.

Applying for a corpse passport
You can use this online application to apply for a corpse passport.
Citizen-friendly and digital: simply complete this online application directly via your internet browser. In many cases, this will save you a trip to the authorities.
The corpse passport is issued by the municipality in whose territory the transportation begins. The corpse passport can only be issued if the required documents have been submitted.
Since 01.09.2025, municipalities have also been able to offer the option of applying for a corpse passport online.

The corpse passport is issued as soon as the application with all the necessary documents is complete.
- The following documents must be submitted:
- Death certificate
For transfers abroad, the registry office must have noted on the death certificate that the death has been certified or that certification has been postponed. - In the event of suspected non-natural death: Burial permit in accordance with Section 159 (2) of the Code of Criminal Procedure

The registry office and cemetery administration of the city of Erlangen will be open over the holidays and between the years as follows:
- Until 23.12.2025 during the usual opening hours.
- Monday, 29.12.2025, Tuesday, 30.12.2025 and Friday, 02.01.2026 from 08:00 to 12:00.
- On Monday, 05.01.2026 we will be there for you during the usual opening hours.
- There will be no notarizations of deaths on Wednesday, 07.01.2026.
There will therefore be no notarizations from 24 to 28.12.2025 and from 01 to 02.01.2026 and from 06 to 07.01.2026.
