Informationen
The lower-level food safety authorities in Bavaria (district offices and independent cities) ensure compliance with the regulations governing the distribution of products as defined by the Food and Feed Code (LFGB). Products include food, food additives, tattoo inks, cosmetics, and consumer goods. Food inspectors conduct regular inspections and take samples for this purpose (Section 38(2a) LFGB).
Food inspectors in training are initially employed by a district administration office or an independent city under an employment contract, without having completed a training course or passed an examination. During the two-year training program, they become familiar with the relevant official procedures in the inspection department of a district administrative authority or at the Bavarian Control Authority for Food Safety and Veterinary Affairs (KBLV). At the State Office for Health and Food Safety (LGL), they learn how to handle sample material. In addition, they may complete a one-month internship at a larger food industry facility. As part of their theoretical training at the LGL and the Bavarian School of Public Administration, they complete a six-month course followed by an exam.
Upon successful completion of the training, candidates are expected to be appointed as civil servants (pay grade A 7), provided they meet the requirements under civil service law. With regard to the applicable statutory age limit, candidates must not have reached their 43rd birthday at the time of hire.
Employment Requirements:
- At least a secondary school diploma or a level of education recognized as equivalent by the Bavarian State Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs, following consultation with the State Personnel Committee
- Master craftsman’s certificate in a food-related trade or the state final examination from a technical college (technician school) in a field suitable for food inspection
- Unrestricted eligibility for field assignments
- Class B driver’s license
- Professional and personal suitability for subsequent appointment as a civil servant
Additional requirements for hiring or appointment to civil service status include, in particular:
- Good health
- German citizenship
- Loyalty to the Constitution
- suitability in terms of character
- Age limit: Under current law, transfer to civil service status is generally only possible up to the age of 45
