People often wonder whether cemeteries are still relevant today. Cemeteries are places where the deceased are laid to rest, but they are first and foremost places of remembrance and comfort—places for the living.
A cemetery is far more than a place of silence—it is a mirror of society, where grief, remembrance, and transience converge. First and foremost, it provides a safe space for mourning and saying goodbye, in a ritualized and visible way, so that death is not suppressed. These cemeteries, often idyllically landscaped, offer a place for anyone who needs a break from everyday life. They are visited by bereaved family members and mourners of all ages. They serve as a means of coping with grief, finding solace, and connecting with others. At the same time, they function as the city’s memory: Graves preserve the names and stories of families, professions, and wars that would otherwise be forgotten. Finally, the cultural diversity of Christian, Jewish, and Muslim cemeteries illustrates just how varied forms of remembrance can be, ranging from simple stones to elaborate tombs. Ultimately, the cemetery answers humanity’s fundamental question: What will remain of me? It is a window into transience—and a space to celebrate life in a green oasis.
Furthermore, its ecological value should not be underestimated. Especially in cities, the trees contribute significantly to providing shade and thus to reducing overheating. Biodiversity is very high due to the many different plant species, making it an important habitat for many animal species. Cemeteries are a valuable component of modern cities. They have a positive impact on the quality of urban life and fulfill important functions in contemporary urban societies. They create cultural and social spaces that can provide a sense of belonging and home for everyone.
