What belongs in the garbage can?

Any type of CD or DVD can be recycled - regardless of its condition. Broken and defective data disks can also be recycled in the appropriate collection garbage cans.

Why should you recycle old CDs & DVDs?

Many people know the problem: old CDs and DVDs pile up at home. However, most people don't know what to do with the old disks and silver discs. In any case, household waste is not the right place for the data carriers.

From an ecological point of view, it makes little sense to simply throw CDs away. CDs and DVDs can be recycled relatively easily and must be disposed of in special collection garbage cans. Recycling is economical in many respects: it saves oil, conserves resources and reduces the burden on the environment in the long term. Facts that benefit everyone.

How are CDs recycled?

CDs consist of 97% unmixed plastic (polycarbonate) and a thin metal layer of aluminum with protective lacquer and printing ink. This makes them very suitable for high-quality material recycling.

The reason: CDs can be broken down into almost 100% pure components. During recycling, the aluminum and lacquer coating is removed from the plastic using a mechanical or chemical process.

What happens to the old CDs?

Reprocessed polycarbonate is a high-quality plastic. It can be used to manufacture new products, e.g. in electrical engineering and the automotive industry.

TIP - CDs and data protection

Old CDs with sensitive data become unusable due to a large scratch on both sides and a cut.

Dispose of electrical appliances correctly

Dispose of your old electrical appliances correctly and do your bit for the environment and climate protection. Collection containers for the disposal of small electrical appliances are available at 69 locations. Larger appliances can be disposed of with bulky waste or at the waste transfer station at the harbor. You can dispose of appliances that are still in working order at Erlangen's give-away exchange or social department store, for example.

Waste transfer station at the port

The waste transfer station at the port belongs to the ZVA (Zweckverband Abfallwirtschaft Erlangen/Erlangen-Höchstadt). The special-purpose association under public law collects all waste for recycling/disposal as well as special waste, such as electrical appliances.
