Bicycle lanes are roads that are generally reserved for bicycle traffic. Other vehicles may also be permitted to use them. At the same time, a cycle lane should allow cyclists a comfortable flow of traffic and an appropriate speed, which is why they are usually given priority at junctions.
Since their first use in 1978 in the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen, cycle lanes have proven to be a suitable and safe element for bicycle traffic.
Cyclists must not be obstructed there. Other vehicles must give way to cyclists and allow them to travel unhindered. The maximum speed limit for all vehicles is 30 km/h. Cyclists may also ride side by side.
Yes, ten cycle streets have been designated so far.

It is important for the design of a cycle lane that it is recognized as such in order to ensure the necessary objective and subjective safety. Among other things, there are marking elements that are also intended to promote recognition of the cycle lane for all road users in the sense of a corporate design:
- The bicycle lane pictogram already in use will be retained in its design, but will be marked in a larger version measuring 2.00 x 2.00 m.
- To clarify the route of the cycle lanes, a continuous red broad line will be marked in the longitudinal direction and on both sides. In areas with regular parking at the edge of the road, the wide red line is marked in the direction of travel to the left of the parked vehicles and with a safety distance of 0.50 m. In addition, the areas intended for parking are additionally demarcated from the roadway by a lane boundary (Z 295, white solid line). The lane boundary turns the area into a hard shoulder, but has no effect on parking.
- To clarify the right-of-way regulations, the intersections along a cycle lane should be designed uniformly and clearly. For this reason, in addition to the right-of-way signage, the cycle lane is marked with a red area in the intersection area.
No, unfortunately not yet. Although some cycle streets have the signage required under traffic law (see illustration), they do not yet have the special design. New guidelines for the uniform design of cycle streets were adopted in the Environment, Transport and Planning Committee on February 19, 2019.
The new design guidelines are gradually being implemented for the existing cycle streets. Due to the drying times of the markings, for example, it is possible that intersections may only have the red area at times.
Please note: The markings do not provide any information on traffic regulation. Only the existing signage and white markings are decisive for this.
Yes. In the future, the designation of further new cycle lanes will be examined, which will fit into the cycle network of the City of Erlangen's 2030 Transport Development and Mobility Plan.
Detailed information on the traffic planning element of cycle lanes, their development and their implementation in other municipalities can be found in the practical guide published by the German Institute of Urban Affairs (Difu).
