Mandatory driver's license exchange
Stand: 21.01.2026
A uniform and forgery-proof driving license model is to be introduced in the European Union.
This means that every driving license issued before January 19, 2013 must be exchanged for the new EU driving license by 2033. This will happen in stages.
The next deadline:
For driving licenses issued on or after January 1, 1999, the year of issue of the driving license applies. The next deadline concerns the years of issue 2002 to 2004: the exchange must take place by January 19, 2027. An appointment can be made for the exchange - this can be done online here.
