Waste grease collection - Dispose of cooking oil correctly
Stand: 28.05.2024
Dispose of your used cooking oil correctly and make your contribution to environmental and climate protection. The cities of Erlangen and Fürth collect used cooking oil using green collection bottles and collection machines to produce biodiesel. On this page you will find the locations of the collection containers and other options.
"Fuel FOR the climate" - used cooking oil collection in Erlangen and Fürth
The pilot project "Used cooking oil collection" was very well received by the citizens of Erlangen. Now the collection of used cooking oil is being extended to the whole of Erlangen. The neighboring city of Fürth is also joining in. The joint project between the cities of Fürth and Erlangen is funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety as part of the national climate protection initiative. All households in Erlangen will receive a high-quality collection bottle. In addition, 16 collection machines will be set up in the city.
The distribution of collection bottles in the city area has been completed since August 2022. Here you can see where you can return unused collection bottles or obtain more.
To the locations of the collection containers
Up to date
At the beginning of April 2023, the service provider reported the collection volumes for the first quarter, broken down by the individual machine locations.
If the collection volume remains the same, this would mean that we could collect up to 20,000 kg of waste oil in 2023.
However, the vending machine locations with the comparatively low collection volumes even show room for improvement.
Simple. Safe. Hygienic.
It's very easy to take part: cooking oil left over from frying, cooking or pickling is poured into the collection bottle. This has an extra-wide opening so that nothing spills. The cap ensures that nothing stinks or leaks out. When the bottle is full, it can be handed in at a nearby collection machine (see below for locations). In return, a new, clean bottle is immediately issued, which can be used to continue collecting.

Join in and collect for climate protection
Every drop of used cooking oil that ends up in the collection bottle makes a contribution to climate protection. Just like paper, used glass or plastic, used cooking oil is a recyclable material and can be recycled or reused. The valuable energy source should therefore not be thrown in the bin or dumped down the drain. Through its "second use" as a biofuel, used cooking oil helps to conserve resources and save CO2 as a high-energy secondary raw material: One bottle of used cooking oil provides biofuel that can be used to drive 20 kilometers!
Drainpipes say "thank you"
Collecting your frying and deep-frying oil or margarine leftovers not only helps the climate, but also your drains. This is because they can become blocked with oil and grease and then have to be cleaned at great expense. Collecting used cooking oil is therefore doubly worthwhile: it protects the climate and protects the drain.
Recyclable material instead of waste:
- Used cooking oil belongs in the collection bottle and not in the bin.
- Collecting used cooking oil is climate protection: 1 bottle of used cooking oil = biofuel for 20 km.
- This can go in: Deep-frying and frying oils, oils from pickled foods (e.g. sheep's cheese or peppers), margarine.
- Not allowed: chemicals, mineral, motor and lubricating oils, leftover food, dressings and sauces
