The adult education centers offer a wide range of courses in the following program areas
- Politics - Society - Environment
- Culture - Design
- health
- Languages
- Work - Profession
- Basic education - school-leaving qualifications
The courses are geared towards the orientation, education and qualification interests of the participants. They serve the development of individual potential, further vocational training and qualification adjustments and contribute to social integration.
With courses in literacy, basic education and catching up on school-leaving qualifications, adult education centers also offer educationally disadvantaged target groups a second chance. Since the "Immigration Act" came into force, they have been working nationwide as providers of integration courses. Certificates play a role above all in foreign languages and in vocational training and take account of the interest in recognized certificates of achievement.
Cross-programme offers (e.g. Young VHS, senior citizens' education, intercultural learning), target group and milieu-specific as well as tailor-made (company) offers supplement the traditional range of courses as well as e-learning and blended learning offers, some of which are integrated into the work of newly conceived "learning centers". VHS are taking on new service functions, for example in learning advice or as initiators and moderators of local networks and cooperations (e.g. in the "Learning Regions" program).
Information about the courses, seminars, lectures and exhibitions of the adult education center in a municipality or district can be found on the website of the municipality, district or adult education center.
