School Development and Full-Day Programs in Erlangen
Stand: 10.07.2026
2026 Education Report

Contents
The report provides an overview of school development and full-day programs in Erlangen. It uses data to highlight trends from recent years, identifies needs, and, where possible, outlines areas for municipal action.
The need for school facilities depends largely on the number of children and adolescents in the population. For this reason, demographic trends are always taken into account in school development planning. The chapter “Framework Conditions” describes trends in population structures, family structures, population projections, residential development areas, and migration patterns.
The City of Erlangen is responsible for the operational costs of a total of 33 schools within the city limits. In addition, there are four private schools in Erlangen operated by various organizations. The chapter “School Development” presents key school profiles and instructional concepts, outlines trends in student enrollment, and discusses the teaching staff at these schools. It also addresses the topics of inclusion and integration in Erlangen’s schools, cultural education, education for sustainable development, and digitalization, along with their significance for school development.
The fourth chapter addresses the goals of full-day programs and the Full-Day Education Act. In addition to school-based full-day programs, this includes care services provided by child care facilities (after-school care centers and study halls) as well as all other services offered by external partners (e.g., lunch-time care) that are part of the all-day program. This is followed by a brief overview of the current state of research, particularly regarding the utilization, impact, and quality criteria of all-day programs, as well as their opportunities and challenges. Furthermore, the forms and stakeholders involved in Erlangen’s all-day program, as well as trends in student enrollment in the program, will be presented. Finally, the results of an online survey on the topic of “Quality in All-Day Programs” will be presented.
The conclusion summarizes the report’s key findings and developments and identifies needs. Where possible, it also identifies areas for local action in the areas of school development and full-day programs.
