Digital Day: Erlangen Focuses on a Wide Range of Online Activities

On June 26, the seventh annual nationwide Digital Day took place. Under the theme “Digital Security: Understand. Share. Trust,” Germany’s largest day of action for digital inclusion made digital technologies understandable and accessible to everyone.
Expanding Digital Services
The City of Erlangen also supports the goals of Digital Day. Digitalization is transforming daily life in many areas—from communication and learning to the use of services. Digital participation is thus increasingly becoming a prerequisite for social participation.
The City of Erlangen is continuously working to expand its digital services and provide as many people as possible with easy access to digital government services. Already today, numerous government services can be conveniently handled online. Currently, over 450 online services are available. These include, for example,
- electronic registration of residence
- applying for resident parking permits
- certificates of residence and criminal background checks, as well as
- various digital services related to vehicle registration.

Conveniently book appointments online
The online ID function (eID) of the national ID card is particularly important for using many digital government services. You can activate this function and set your personal PIN at any time at the information desk of the Citizens’ Office. The eID enables secure digital identification for numerous administrative procedures and other online applications. For select services, appointments can be conveniently booked online (www.erlangen.de/termin). At the same time, the Citizens’ Office remains available for all standard services without an appointment during business hours.

Another component of the citywide digital services is the municipal chatbot (www.erlangen.de/chatbot). Since June 2024, it has been answering questions about city administration. This provides quick and easy access to information on city services and offerings. On average, around 200 citizen inquiries are answered automatically each day.
Numerous Digital Application Options
Secure digital communication channels are also gaining importance. The secure contact form allows concerns to be submitted to the city administration in an encrypted manner that complies with data protection regulations. In addition, numerous digital application options have been created in various areas—for example, for
- cultural grants
- sports grants, or
- services provided by the City Youth Welfare Office.
