Changes to Opening Hours and Availability, Restrictions
- A severe thunderstorm with gusty winds swept through Erlangen and the surrounding region early Tuesday evening (July 14). In the city limits alone, the fire department was called out more than 200 times. Some areas are closed off. It is essential to observe these closures.
- Following the fire at the Karl-Heinz-Hiersemann-Halle, the locker rooms and showers are currently closed. Read more here
- The Karl-Heinz-Hiersemann-Halle will be closed from July 20 through August 9. The closure is due to the conversion to LED lighting.
- The Youth Career Agency will be closed from August 10 through September 11. There will be no office hours during this time.
- The City Library’s self-service return machine ( Palais Stutterheim, inner courtyard) is out of order. Therefore, media cannot be returned outside of the library’s opening hours.
- The City Library’s bookmobile is on vacation: It will not be in service from August 3 to 28. The City Library’s main branch will be open as usual during summer break.
- Due to a technical problem, no emails could be delivered to the City of Erlangen during the night of October 29–30, 2025. Additionally, residents are warned to be wary of unsolicited emails.

If you’re visiting us
For almost all departments, you must make an appointment before visiting. Access to City Hall is only possible through the main entrance on Rathausplatz. Access to City Hall from the east side (“City Hall rear entrance”) is restricted to city employees and delivery services. Dogs are generally not permitted. Exceptions are only possible if bringing a dog is necessary for health or educational reasons (e.g., service or therapy dogs) or if the dog owner has been asked by the city to bring their dog to the office.

You do not need an appointment for:
- For the Citizen Services office on the ground floor of City Hall (applying for ID cards, change of address, driver’s license matters, criminal background checks, vehicle registration, resident parking permits, and disabled parking permits), you do not need an appointment. You can book an appointment for certain services. During peak visitor times, the Citizen Services Office reserves the right to stop issuing numbers or tickets for the waiting area up to 120 minutes before closing. In this case, please come back another day to handle your business. If you wish to apply for an ID card, a photo booth is available on the ground floor of City Hall. You can schedule an appointment online to exchange your driver’s license. You can check the current wait time for the Citizen Service Center here.

Erlangen Assistance Center
As part of an intermunicipal cooperation initiative, the Erlangen Benefits Center is responsible for individuals eligible for benefits (employees) in the cities of Ansbach, Erlangen, Nuremberg, and Weiden, as well as in the districts of Erlangen-Höchstadt, Kelheim, and Nürnberger Land, and several municipal companies.
