Foreigners who are required to leave the country and whose deportation has been temporarily suspended are tolerated. The foreigner is issued with a certificate of this, the so-called toleration.

The EU Blue Card can be applied for by non-EU nationals with an academic or equivalent level of qualification who intend to take up employment in Germany.

Foreign nationals from non-EU countries who are legally resident in Germany on a long-term basis and have integrated both economically and socially can, under certain conditions, be granted "EU permanent residence permit".

A foreigner living in Germany is entitled to naturalization under certain conditions.

Foreigners who do not or do not yet meet the requirements for naturalization can be naturalized at their discretion, provided certain conditions are met.

The settlement permit is a permanent residence permit that entitles the holder to engage in gainful employment. The requirements for issuance vary depending on the purpose of the stay.

Upon request, a residence permit issued in the form of a sticker in the passport may be replaced with an electronic residence permit.
