Residence Permit; Application to Amend the Supplementary Provisions

If you are a foreign national subject to a residency requirement in a specific location, you may, under certain conditions, have this residency requirement lifted or modified if you wish to move to another federal state.

To do so, you must submit a corresponding application to the relevant immigration office.

• A person entitled to asylum, a refugee, or a person granted subsidiary protection:
  
  • Employment subject to social security contributions (at least 15 hours per week and a net income of at least 978.00 (as of July 2026)) or an income sufficient to cover living expenses
  • A place in a vocational training or academic program
  • Your spouse, registered domestic partner, or minor child with whom you are related and with whom you live or have lived as a family resides at a different address
  • Prevention of hardship (e.g., humanitarian reasons)
• Other foreign nationals subject to a residency requirement:
  • an income sufficient to cover living expenses
  • A place in a training or academic program
  • the person with whom you are married, your registered domestic partner, or your minor child lives at a different residence
• Other humanitarian reasons

The requirements may also be met by a family member of the applicant.

• If you wish to apply to have a residence requirement on your residence permit modified or lifted, you must first submit an application to the immigration office with jurisdiction over your case.
• The Foreigners’ Registration Office will review your application and will generally request approval from the Foreigners’ Registration Office at your new place of residence.
• Once the review is complete, you will receive a corresponding decision.

You may not move until you have received approval from your current immigration office. 

There are no deadlines.

• The following documents may be required:
  
  • A person entitled to asylum, a refugee, or a person recognized as eligible for subsidiary protection
    • To prove employment:
      • An employment contract or job offer for employment subject to social insurance contributions totaling at least 15 hours per week, which generates an income of at least the average monthly subsistence level for a single person as defined in Book II of the Social Code
    • To prove enrollment in a degree program or vocational training:
      • Apprenticeship contract or certificate of enrollment
    • To prove the place of residence of your spouse, civil partner, or minor child
      • Certificate of residence
      • Marriage certificate
      • Birth certificate
    • To prove other grounds for avoiding undue hardship:
      • Detailed explanation
      • Medical certificate
    • To provide evidence of an integration measure:
      • Certificate of participation in an integration course, a vocational language course, a qualification program lasting at least three months that leads to professional recognition, or a continuing education program in accordance with Book III of the Social Code
  • Other foreign nationals
    • To prove employment:
      
      • Employment contract
      • the last three pay stubs
    • To prove enrollment in a degree program or vocational training:
      
      • Apprenticeship contract
      • Confirmation from the employer that the apprenticeship has begun
      • Certificate of Enrollment
      • Proof of enrollment in integration courses
      • Proof of vocational language courses
      • Proof of participation in qualification programs
      • Proof of continuing education programs
    • To verify the place of residence of your spouse, civil partner, or minor child:
      • Certificate of Residence
      • Marriage certificate
      • Birth certificate
      • Acknowledgment of paternity
      • Joint custody declaration
    • Other humanitarian reasons
      • e.g., medical certificates
      • Detailed written justification

  The relevant immigration office may request additional documents from you on a case-by-case basis.

Residency requirement: 50.00 euros; if you receive social benefits, the application is free of charge

Exemptions and reductions are possible under the Residence Ordinance.
