Parking fees in Erlangen
Stand: 06.11.2024
The city of Erlangen's new parking fee regulations have been in force since March 2024. The aim is to reduce the number of cars looking for a parking space in the city center. The parking fees are intended to better guide drivers.
Until now, parking in public areas was very cheap compared to parking garages. The higher prices are intended to steer drivers looking for a parking space to the large parking lots and private parking garages. From there, you can reach the destinations in the city center on foot or comfortably using the free public transport system and the free City Line. The CityLinie connects
- the large parking lot
- various parking garages
- central points such as the university hospitals, the arcades
- the northern city center

To make parking in Erlangen more convenient, more and more parking ticket machines are being converted to accept cashless payments. Over the next few years, the machines will gradually be expanded to include a cashless payment option.
Since January 2023, cell phone parking has also been possible at all chargeable parking spaces in Erlangen. This means that the parking fee can now be paid cashless at every metered parking space in the city. The city works together with the provider "mobilet" for this purpose.
Large parking lot
The price increase in the large parking lot is due to the mobility turnaround. Urban car traffic has been subsidized for decades and is to be reduced. Public transport ticket prices have been continuously increased in recent years due to rising costs. Parking fees for cars, on the other hand, have been at a constantly low level. The large difference between public transport ticket prices and parking fees is to be adjusted with the new parking fee regulations. The reason for the drastic increase is that no adjustments have been made in previous decades. Compared to our direct neighboring cities of Nuremberg and Fürth, Erlangen is only a latecomer with the increase in parking fees in the city center. The large parking lot is still a comparatively inexpensive alternative to the parking facilities in the city center.
Traffic relief
The new parking fee regulations are part of a package of measures. Traffic in the city center can thus be better managed. In addition, the city is to be relieved of through traffic and traffic looking for a parking space. Other components of the package include the VAG_Rad bicycle rental system and the free inner city area for public transport in the city center, including the City Line. The parking areas in the city center are well connected by free public transport. This should make it easier for people who are dependent on a car to find a parking space.
