Citywide Projects

Starting in the 2026–2027 school year, the legal entitlement for elementary school children—initially for first graders—will take effect. This entitlement will be gradually expanded to include subsequent grade levels in the years that follow. The legal entitlement is intended to guarantee full-day educational and care services for schoolchildren. This imposes an obligation on the City of Erlangen to consider how to ensure this legal entitlement through youth services and schools, to take appropriate measures, and, in particular, to make elementary schools “structurally ready” for this purpose.

The City-Suburban Railway (StUB) is intended to connect the cities of Nuremberg, Erlangen, and Herzogenaurach as a tram system and help secure the region’s future by serving as an efficient, environmentally friendly, accessible, and attractive alternative to car travel. The StUB offers the opportunity for sustainable mobility, particularly for the large number of commuters along the urban corridor.

With the “Klima-Aufbruch” initiative, the city of Erlangen has embraced its role as an active driver of greenhouse gas neutrality. Through a unique participatory process, we worked together with initiatives, associations, businesses, the scientific community, and citizens to develop the “Klima-Aufbruch” roadmap—a catalog of 41 measures.

The city of Erlangen is developing a pedestrian traffic plan, with the active participation of its residents, to improve safety for pedestrians and make the city more attractive.

The Urban Development Concept (STEK) is being developed to provide an interdisciplinary framework of guidelines and objectives for the entire city of Erlangen for the coming years. The STEK aims to identify the substantive and spatial priorities of urban development and to formulate medium- to long-term visions, goals, and projects. Existing competing interests will be discussed as part of the STEK process in order to jointly establish priorities and create development opportunities for the future. To this end, there will be broad public participation.

Current wastewater treatment leaves trace substances from pharmaceuticals and personal care products, as well as certain industrial and household chemicals, almost entirely in the treated wastewater. A fourth treatment stage is necessary to treat the wastewater appropriately before it flows back into the Regnitz River.

Integrated sports development planning addresses the requirements for modern and sustainable development in the areas of sports, physical activity, and health.

Erlangen’s downtown area is heavily burdened by traffic (parked vehicles, commuter traffic, etc.). To reduce motor vehicle traffic in the city and improve the quality of life for residents, public transportation will be further strengthened through appropriate measures.
