Project City as a whole

From the 2026/2027 school year, the legal entitlement for primary school children will come into force, initially for year 1. This will be successively extended to the other grades in the following years. The legal entitlement is intended to guarantee all-day education and childcare for schoolchildren. As a result, the city of Erlangen is obliged to consider how youth welfare services and schools can ensure the legal entitlement, to take appropriate measures and, in particular, to make elementary school "structurally fit" for this.

With Climate Awakening, the city of Erlangen has assumed its role as an active shaper of greenhouse gas neutrality. In a unique participatory process, we have worked with initiatives, associations, companies, scientists and citizens to develop the Climate Awakening Roadmap - a catalog of 41 measures.

The urban development concept (STEK) is an interdisciplinary orientation and target framework for the whole of Erlangen for the coming years. The STEK is intended to identify the substantive and spatial focal points of urban development and formulate medium to long-term visions, goals and projects. Existing competing interests will have to be discussed in the STEK process in order to jointly set priorities and create development areas for the future. This will involve broad public participation.

The existing wastewater treatment process leaves trace substances from pharmaceuticals and personal care products as well as certain industrial and household chemicals almost completely in the treated wastewater. A 4th purification stage is necessary to treat the wastewater accordingly before it flows back into the Regnitz.

Integrated sports development planning is a response to the requirements for contemporary and sustainable development in the areas of sport, exercise and health.

The city of Erlangen is developing a pedestrian traffic concept with the intensive involvement of citizens in order to make walking safer and more attractive.

Erlangen's city center is heavily burdened by traffic (parked vehicles, commuter traffic, etc.) In order to relieve the city of motor vehicle traffic and increase the quality of stay, local public transport will be further strengthened by suitable measures.

In future, the Stadt-Umland-Bahn (StUB) will connect the cities of Nuremberg, Erlangen and Herzogenaurach as a tramway and help secure the future of the region as an efficient, environmentally friendly, low-barrier and attractive alternative to car traffic. The StUB also offers sustainable mobility, particularly for the large number of commuters along the urban axis.
