Check travel documents

Stand: 10.06.2026

Are you planning to travel abroad during the summer vacation? Then please check the validity of your travel documents. The processing time for a passport is currently around six weeks.

Just in time for the summer vacations, the Citizens' Office recommends that all those wishing to travel check the validity of their documents such as passports and ID cards. If the documents are no longer valid or will expire in the next few weeks, a new document must be applied for.

Where do I apply for the documents?

Applications for new documents can be made at the Citizens' Service on the first floor of the town hall. An appointment is not necessary. Opening hours:

  • Monday, Tuesday, Thursday from 8:00 to 18:00
  • Wednesday and Friday from 8:00 to 12:00.

The current waiting time can be checked here. However, for better planning, an appointment can also be made via the appointment portal (https://erlangen.flexappoint.de)(book an appointment).

A current biometric passport photo can be taken directly at the citizens' office in the town hall foyer at the Speedcapture terminal or at certified photo service providers (photographers, drugstores, etc.). You must also bring your previous identification documents with you. In addition, the Citizens' Registration Office requires the current civil status certificate (birth certificate, marriage certificate, divorce decree) in particular as proof of the name - if no passport or ID document has yet been applied for from the City of Erlangen or if the civil status has changed since the last application.

How long is the processing time?

The processing time for a passport is currently around six weeks. It currently takes three weeks for an identity card. The documents are produced by the Bundesdruckerei in Berlin. The city of Erlangen has no influence on the production time.
