Check Travel Documents

Stand: 04.08.2026

Are you planning to travel abroad? If so, please check the validity of your travel documents. The processing time for a passport is currently about six weeks.

If the documents are no longer valid or are set to expire in the coming weeks, you must apply for a new document.

Where can you apply for these documents?

Applications for the new documents must be submitted at the Citizen Services Office on the ground floor of City Hall. No appointment is necessary. Hours of operation:

  • Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

You can check the current wait time here. However, to help you plan better, you can also schedule an appointment via the appointment portal (https://erlangen.flexappoint.de) (Book an Appointment).

A current biometric passport photo can be taken directly at the Citizens’ Office in the City Hall foyer at the Speedcapture terminal or at certified photo service providers (photographers, drugstores, etc.). You must also bring your previous identification documents with you. In addition, the Citizens’ Office requires your current civil status certificate (birth certificate, marriage certificate, divorce decree)—particularly to verify your name—if you have not previously applied for a passport or ID document with the City of Erlangen, or if your civil status has changed since your last application.

How long is the processing time?

The processing time for a passport is currently about six weeks. For an ID card, it currently takes three weeks. The documents are produced by the Federal Printing Office in Berlin. The City of Erlangen has no influence over the production time.
