Welcome to Erlangen!
Over the centuries, Erlangen's city history has proven that migration and integration can succeed. Accordingly, the city motto is "Open by tradition".
A good third of Erlangen's population has a migration background. All of them are Erlangeners and shape our city with their different cultural, social and religious experiences. The question of origin and tradition plays less and less of a role, but our modern urban society is characterized by diverse values and pluralistic lifestyles.
We want to take this great potential into account, use and promote the talents and potential of people from other countries and advocate equal participation for all.
A city for all
People from all over the world live in Erlangen. As an "intercultural city" with a cosmopolitan outlook, Erlangen's motto is "A city for all". Whether it's a residence permit, professional and social prospects or a fulfilled and carefree private life: We want you to feel at home and safe in Erlangen and for our city to quickly become your home. Here you will find everything you need to know about living in Erlangen.

60 years of the recruitment agreement
October 30, 2021 marks the 60th anniversary of the recruitment agreement with Turkey. In these 60 years, several thousand people have come to Erlangen from Turkey. Some only for a few years, many for good. They have become part of Erlangen, belong to it, make their contribution and shape our diverse, open urban society. In 2022, the lifetime achievements of the former "guest workers" of Turkish origin, their children and grandchildren were honored in a series of events.

Activities of the Integration Coordination Office
Diversity conference
We need the talents and skills of everyone in Erlangen to build a strong community. And everyone should be able to participate equally in the social life and prosperity of our city. That is why the motto of the first Diversity Conference 2022 was "Diversity connects". On the day of the event, the participating organizations worked out what "more diversity" could mean for their association, company or public institution.
In 2025, the participants discussed the content and joint activities for the "Erlangen Declaration for Diversity, Respect and Tolerance", which has been signed by numerous Erlangen organizers since autumn 2025. All signatories of the Erlangen Declaration will be invited to future diversity conferences.
Naturalization ceremony
Once a year, the city of Erlangen organizes a naturalization ceremony and invites all new citizens from the previous year.

Frequently asked questions
A special feature of Erlangen's rental housing market is the letting of large apartments, particularly those close to the city center, to several individual tenants. In addition to a private room, the rent includes the use of communal rooms such as the kitchen and bathroom.
The rent index does not describe these tenancies, as only self-contained apartments were used for the calculation. However, in order to be able to offer at least a guide to the usual rent level for single rooms in Erlangen, the rent index survey also took into account individually rented rooms.
Due to the small data basis, we would like to point out that the figures published here are not part of the qualified rent index and are for orientation purposes only.
Results:
The size of one's own room has little influence on the rent level. Therefore, there is no differentiation by room size. For the same reason, we do not publish rents per square meter.
| Location | Lower limit | Average value | Upper limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| City center or walking distance up to max. 1000 m from the city center | 250 | 303 | 329 |
| Over 1000 m walking distance from the city center | 236 | 280 | 305 |
The distance to the city center refers to the extent of the city center as described on page 12 of the current rent index. The walking distances can be determined on a suitable (online) map.
As with the completed apartments, there is a lower and an upper value in addition to the average value. Two thirds of the rents for single rooms lie within these price ranges, which is the same as the "local comparative rent" You can take into account the following to classify a property within the range:
- Features of the apartment
- Room size
- Quality and quantity of sanitary facilities
